Many happy returns Paul. Thanks for keeping things going. I yhad hoped to attend the 50th reunion but it conflicts with my 52nd trip to the air races in Reno. https://youtu.be/4OPr7ZF3zg8
Sheila, you are clearly the most active person on this site. I don't look that often but wanted to wish you a speedy recovery from hip surgery. Physical therapy is not much fun but is key to a positive outcome.
Dear Superintendent and Trustees:
I fail to see how naming the Napa Senior High School mascot "Indians" shows anything but respect for the indigenous people of the Napa Valley. We are not talking "redskins" here.
I grew up playing on the Indian grinding stones near and along the creek in the Congress Valley. I asked question of my parents and neighbors and learned about how the Napa, or Onastis, Indians ground acorns, hunted and lived. D.E. and Lucile Alexander who owned the property next door as well as the huge cattle ranch which encompased most of the actual Carnerous Valley, had the most magnificant collection of indian baskets I have ever seen before or since. As a child I was fascinated and later was proud the be in the marching band and play at Napa Indians games.
From my perspective, you are overlooking a great educational opportunity here. Wouldn't it be better to educate your students about the proud history of the Mishewal, Mayakman and Onastis or Wappo people who lived in the Napa Valley rather than to imply the name Indian is an insult? Wouldn't a true activist help educate the public and glorify the name rather than remove it from our vocabulary?
