Two men were killed Monday when the helicopter they were in clipped three power lines that straddle the North Fork of the American River and plunged into the water. The downed lines ignited two separate brush fires, the largest blackening more than 70 acres. John Philip Driscoll, 39, of Rocklin, and Glenn David Latourelle, 41, of Napa, perished in the crash, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. The helicopter left the Auburn Airport at 1:30 p.m. and was reported down just 35 minutes later. The two were reportedly on a training flight. David McKittrick, who witnessed the crash, said the small helicopter flew directly into the lines, about 300 feet above the water in the canyon near Foresthill. The 60,000-volt power lines run from Interstate 80 near Weimar to the Foresthill Divide, said Greg Xepoleas, a member of the California Highway Patrol Helicopter Unit.

I meet Glen when we were 4 years old. We climbed trees, chased cows and rolled down hills together. I miss my friend.

Glenn was my friend since 4th grade. He always helped me relax and play - and often get into trouble with him (throwing rocks at the hornets sounded like a good thing until they found us; riding a pulley strung between trees was great - even though we always crashed at the end; etc). I knew his family and he knew mine - we had picnics together and just hung out, reading comicbooks and playing all types of games. He died in 1993 in a helicopter crash and I was honored to have his Mom ask me to give a eulogy at the memorial service at their home. He was a good friend that I miss often.

Glen and I were neighbors and classmates for more than 20 years. What adventures we shared exploring the cave for gold nuggets and running through open fields. We would all pile into his Mom's car for Summer swim lessons at Redwood Jr. High.
Glen was a very kind and gentle friend. We all miss him.
