I met Tom again after college. He was a friend of my college roomate. Here is what her husband had to say about him:
"I was told of his death by a mutual friend quite a long time back, and then only several years after it supposedly happened. Story I was given was that he had been lost overboard in the Pacific whilst working as a First Engineer for American President Line. Spooky part is, I had sailed in the same berth for the same company. It was a dangerous job.

Thom was a fine shipmate and a good, true friend. Wouldn't want to cause anyone problems by mistakenly reporting his passing, but believe this is what often happens when one is lost at sea: no body, no certainty, so no public notices, no trace.

On the other hand, if we were so lucky as to find Thom alive and kicking somewhere out there, he'd probably laugh himself sick at the premature report of his demise." Mark Oliver via Peggy Burris
